Today, we stand at a critical juncture in the life of this sacred site.
Restoring a Hidden Witness to History.
On the morning of December 7, 1941, the quiet bungalows on Ford Island were anything but silent. These historic Chief Petty Officer (CPO) quarters, nestled just a few hundred yards from Battleship Row, stood in direct line of sight of the USS Arizona as the Japanese attack began. In those homes, families took cover. Sailors raced to their duty stations. Explosions shook the walls. Windows shattered. Lives were changed forever.
These humble bungalows bore witness to one of the most defining moments in world history — and today, they still stand.
But barely.
Over the decades, these WWII-era structures have fallen into disrepair, neglected by time, the elements, and a lack of resources. Now, their wooden frames are warped, roofs compromised, and interiors uninhabitable. Without urgent intervention, these authentic and irreplaceable remnants of the Pearl Harbor attack could be lost forever.
That’s why Pacific Historic Parks, in partnership with the National Park Service, is undertaking a $2.5 million capital campaign to fully restore, preserve, and interpret the Chief Petty Officer Bungalows for generations to come.
When you support this project, you’re doing more than funding a restoration — you’re preserving the memory of those who served, expanding public access to authentic WWII history, and ensuring future generations understand the human scale of war and the urgency of peace. We must not let these historic homes — or the stories they hold — fade into dust. By restoring the Chief Petty Officer bungalows, we honor the sailors, their families, and the lives shaped by history. Together, we can bring history home.
These aren’t just old houses — they are personal, immersive extensions of the Pearl Harbor story. Once restored, the Ford Island CPO Bungalows will serve as an emotional and educational extension of the visitor experience at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.
Your gift will support:
Visitors will walk the same floors as the Chief Petty Officers who served in 1941. They’ll look through the same windows toward the harbor. And they’ll experience history not from behind a screen, but from the very rooms where it unfolded.
All donors will receive an email confirmation that includes a special link to submit their Pearl Harbor Heroes Profile. Please watch your inbox for your donation confirmation and the HEROES LINK! Your confirmation email also serves as your official receipt and may be used for tax-deduction purposes.
