My grandfather Toivo “Ty” Heikkinen was born June 24, 1913 in Michigan after his parents immigrated from Finland. He enlisted in the Army on May 15, 1942. Ty seldom spoke of his experiences. He was apparently overseas for a while since I have an ALL AMERICAN CLUB, AUKLAND NEW ZEALAND CLUB card that isn’t dated.
Ty was in the DAV chapter #51. He was Chapter # 51 commander in 1961. He sold poppies every year on the streets of Detroit as other veterans did. Ty passed away December 28, 1986. I thank my grandfather, along with many other brave souls, who served our country.
